Gift GivingBack to Top

Hugs for Kids offers gift wrapping on all web purchases. Simply select the gift wrap option at the checkout. We will also include a complimentary gift tag but if you would prefer to purchase a more formal gift card we can then include a personalised message for you.  You can find out more about our gift wrapping service here.

We have a great little brochure helpfully titled "Everything you need and nothing you don't" which gives you some brilliant practical advice with out all the bits of pieces that you never end up using.

Absolutely, that is more than enough. Anyone who would think any less of another for any gift of generosity and thoughtfulness, be it $100, $1000 or a simple gesture, is not really worthy of the gift in the first place. New parents will appreciate anything you have to offer.

The 2nd, 3rd, 4th (or beyond!) baby will probably get a lot of hand-me-downs. There's nothing wrong with hand-me-downs but every baby needs to have something special all of their own.

We've come up with a few ideas that will help if you're scratching your head or at a loss:

1. A keepsake or something personalised - A lovely music box, wall hanging, special blanket, monogrammed clothing, crockery or cutlery set.

2. Outsource kindness and help for Mum - cleaning service, video streaming or audio subscription or even dinner delivered.

3. Replenish and/or replace - Certain baby items should not be used for more than one child or after a certain period of time, or they may simply be worn out by now. Consider replacing these items: bibs and burp cloths, soothers and teething toys, baby tooth brush and all things consumable - nappies, wipes, creams, bubble bath....

4. Photography - purchase a newborn or family session. Find a lovely album.

5. YOUR favourite Post-partum/Baby product - if you have your own kids, put together a basket of the things that made life a little easier.

6. GIFT CARDS!!! Make sure they can be used online from the comfort of the couch, bed or rocking-chair at 3am - most good baby stores offer vouchers. We do!!!. If you are thinking practicality - Supermarkets that deliver, UBER Eats, Amazon.

Anything Aussie animal is always a win. For babies we have lovely Halcyon Nights rompers, hats, bibs and wraps. Nana Huchy Rattles and softies. And we have some super cuddly Koala comforters and soft Huggies from OB Designs. These are all Australian designed.

For bigger kids, our Roasted Fox leggings and tees are a wonderful gift that it is only available in Australia.

You can't go past our Magna-Tiles or Matador - open ended, built to last, endless possibilities. They will be playing with these for years and years to come.

Bekday is also known as Friday. Most Fridays. Otherwise, she is in a paddock wrangling miniature cows; in her office dreaming, scheming and organising our magical Hugs for Kids world; doing the school run; or possibly juggling all 3. Please leave a message if you miss her in store - we will make sure she gets it and she loves hearing from our lovely customers.

There are so many options in Belgrave, from the Belgrave Bakery with the most amazing pies, to La Volitaire which is currently selling a range of tasty pastries on top of their normal menu, or further up towards Tecoma is Earthly Pleasures. A beautiful blue stone building with a fantastic flavours and a great vegan menu.

A ride on Puffing Billy is not to be missed when visiting the Hills. However, we don't think its necessary to do the round trip if you don't have to - or unless your little one is a real Foamer or budding ferroequinologist (we googled it :).

If you can, organise to be collected at the other end -one way is plenty of tooting and choo-chooing for everyone. We found that the return trip makes for very tired and "over it" kiddies - they've seen it all before, just in the other direction.

There are two options : Belgrave to Gembrook is 1 hour 50min one-way. Belgrave to Emerald-Lakeside is approximately 1 hour, one way.

From Hugs for Kids, just cross the road, walk up to the roundabout and cross again, walk over the railway line and hang a left - you can't miss it.

From the city, catch the Belgrave line train (just over an hour ride) get off at Belgrave and follow the blue line and the signs - too easy.

There are plenty of parking options - we found the easiest and readily available to be behind the main drag off Reynolds Lane. The Terrys Ave end of the car park has free parking from 7:30am.

The Puffing Billy and Belgrave Station parking can fill up very quickly, but worth a try.

You can get more detail here.

At Cheap As, on the Belgrave main street, up the back of the store, on the right hand side.

Birdsland is a great walk, and it's a loop which means you don't need someone to pick you up at the other end (unless you want to continue walking to Lysterfield Lake).

Grants Picnic ground has a range of walks you can do from short, a decent stroll:

- Hardy Gully Nature Walk: 0.7km: 45 minutes; Gentle.

- Tree Fern Loop: 0.6km; 20 minutes; Very Easy - some down and up but with a railing to assist and seating along the way.

- Tregellas Loop Walk: 2.5km; 45 minutes; Very Easy - one uphill section.

- Margaret Lester Forest Walk: 0.5km; Gentle - suitable for prams and wheelchairs.

Other walks include the Sassafrass Creek walk, which you can access from the maternal health centre car park. It's a 14km trail that takes you all the way to Emerald, and any of the gardens we have in the hills.

So many little girls and boys hate having their hair-brushed. What you imagined would be a lovely bonding moment is actually a battle of wills and always end with someone in tears. Hair brushing can also be very traumatic for children with sensory processing disorders as something mildly painful or uncomfortable to us can be extreme for them. Neither of you like Mohawks, so what can you do?

1.Use a kid-friendly de-tangling spray - free from parabens, sulphates and other nasties. We love No Nasties - Slick Kids Detangling Spray - it's plant based and smells delicious.

2. There is also nothing like a ton of deep conditioner to cure the tangles. Again, anything that is free from sulphates.

3. Skip the shampoo and don't wash hair every day - it strips natural oils which can actually cause dry hair and more knots.

4. Choose the right brush and make sure you are brushing the right way. The right hairbrush is a very personal decision and what works for one person, doesn’t always work for another. But if you have a kid with tangles, you need help ASAP. Our customers love Dessata Detangling brushes, they come in mini and grown-up sizes in lots of bright colours and work for most hair types. do a little research or ask a hairdresser.

5. Use a silk or satin pillowcase to relieve the snarls and tangles. They also stop fragile hair from de-hydrating.

6. Try not to go to bed with damp or wet hair. Damp hair sticks to the pillowcase and gets twisted up during sleep. if its long enough, try to get it in a plait or braid for bedtime - make it part of the bedtime routine.

7. Distraction and Bribery – read a book, watch cartoons, play with a toy.

8. Sometimes the noise of hair being brushed can be distressing and uncomfortable – try covering their ears with your hands as you brush. Its worth a try.

9. Cover it up 😊. If you cant see it, it mustn't be there – hats, beanies, hoodies, ribbons and bows.

The struggle is very real and the options are infinite.

There are some great Social media groups who, believe it or not, exist solely to address this very issue and are a wonderful resource - "Lunchbox Mums" is a good one.

We have test driven various brands and love Yumbox. There are various sizes options from Snack size through to 6 compartment bento style. Yumbox lunchboxes have silicone lids that seals each section of the lunchbox and makes it leak-proof - even for things like yougurt and fruit puree.

For hot food the Yumbox Zuppa Insulated Food Jar (420ml)) is the perfect size for school bags. It is a triple insulated food jar designed to keep food warm 6-8 hours, or cold up to 8 hours (use an ice pack).

So Young make really sturdy and trendy soft insulated bags that fit the Yumbox nicely and slide neatly into most school bags.

Choose a hat with a soft adjustable chin strap and that is made from soft breathable fabric. If my hat was hot and scratchy I'd be pulling it off too.

Make putting on a hat on part of your "going outside" routine - no matter what the weather. If they're old enough, get them to help choose a hat. Make sure you put your hat on too :) and if all else fails there's always distraction and bribery.

Our friends at Bedheads know exactly what they are talking about - which is why we stock them :)

At Hugs for Kids, we bring together the very best baby and children's products on offer and present them in a single, accessible space. So whatever it is that you need; clothes, toys, dinnerware, stationery, baby needs, decor or more, we know we've got you covered.

Not only do we have an amazing range that will satisfy your every need, it will also cover all of your kids from birth to around ten years old. We're not just a baby shop, not just for toddlers and not just for school kids. Boys or girls, we've got something for everyone.

Our own kids use the products we stock, so do we care about what we put on the shelves? You better believe it. If it's not good enough for our kids, it's not good enough for yours. So when we say we only stock the best brands, we mean it.

Our Love Mae Dinner sets are made Bamboo and therefore not recommended for Microwave or oven use. They are dishwasher safe however. We do have other dinnerware options including Re-play which is made from recycled milk bottles, which is dishwasher safe and microwaveable up to 80 degrees centigrade.

At this stage, we do not however we do have Barney Gumnut china dinnerware.

Merino Kids Sleeping Bags are designed in New Zealand, the superfine merino is spun and woven and finished in India in a sweatshop free environment. Merino Kids have very stringent and ethical set of criteria when engageing with manufacturing partners, which is one of the reasons we love their products you can read more on thier website.

Love to Dream are designed in Australia and made in China.

No we don't we do have Jellycat bunnies, but we do have some lovely bunnies from Nana Huchy and OB Designs that are super cuddly.

Nana Huchy is a Melbourne-based brand, we love them because not only do they create sweet, treasured toys and gifts but they use luxurious, soft and natural materials - which we love for our littlies.

OB Designs is another Australian based company that produces divinely soft and tactile cuddlies and is committed to creating products that are ethical and sustainable - did we mention that their bunnies are super cute and cuddly ?

We get this question a lot. Magna-Tiles will work with most other brands of magnetic tile. Connetix, Play- mag, Picasso tiles, Jack & Roo Mag Builders and Mag-genius can all be used with Magna Tiles.

Between brands the magnets might repel - this just means you have to flip them. Which is easy said, but can be challenging and frustrating for little hands.

Magna Tiles are not compatible with Magformer as they are a different size.

It's completely subjective, and the best way to find what works for you is to go to a baby wrap meet up. There other mums will bring along their wraps (and wealth of knowledge), plus some companies donate carriers for people to try. They will usually have woven wraps, ring slings, and most of the popular structured carriers, such as Ergo and Manduka.

Baby Bjorn carriers have come a long way in the last few years. The original design wasn't good for little babies hips, but their new carriers are much more supportive of the frog leg carry, which brings bubs legs up into a more natural position.

We sure do. Honey Sticks Beeswax Crayons were developed by a preschool teacher who was looking for safe and natural crayons for her pupils and are handmade in New Zealand from 100% natural beeswax and non-toxic pigments. They have a delicious natural beeswax scent and are made from environmentally sustainable resources.

The Original Honeysticks have a unique chubby shape making them easier them easier for small hands to hold and much more difficult for small hands to break! Honeysticks also come in long and thins, ideal for older children that can hold a pencil.

What a great idea!!! We have reached out to Yumbox and sadly the answer (at this stage) is no. As you can imagine, it is quite costly to make one-off lunch boxes. What you can do is customise with stickers and decals. We found heaps of vinyl Yumbox sticker options on ETSY.

We love Grimms, its beautiful. However, we don't stock it at Hugs for Kids there are other stores in our local area that do and its readily available online. We do stock beautiful wooden and opened toys which are affordable and just as beautiful. Our range of Q-Toys, Goki and Petit Collage are beautiful, colourful and high-quality wooden toys.

We stock a range of Halcyon Nights Rompers, Hats, Wraps and Bibs with beautiful Australian themed flora and fauna on them; Nana Huchy native animal rattles and softies made from lovely natural fabrics and fibres. Barney Gumnut china dining sets, egg cups and mugs are a lovely keepsake item;. and our Love Mae Australiana Divided plate set will captivate even the fussiest little eaters.

We always have some AnaMalz native animal figurines that your little ones can collected and play with and we also have some lovely books for counting and learning the alphabet that are beautifully illustrated with native flora and fauna - great for sending to loved ones overseas.

You have probably heard the term "Open-ended Toys" - a toy that can be played with in many different ways and is not confined to one form of play. For example, a video game has one function and can not be varied depending on which child is playing it.

Open-ended toys encourage endless creativity and imagination and are often described as toys that are 90% child and 10% toy as they leave plenty of room for a child’s input. Ten children could be given the same toy and all ten of them would find different ways to play with it on different occasions based on their interests, developmental stage, natural abilities and imagination. By this definition, the same toy can usually be played with by a baby, a toddler, a preschooler and even beyond. Sometimes, good quality, long-lasting open-ended toys are a substantial initial investment, but well worth it if you consider how much use they will get. Here are some ideas:

1. Magna-Tiles

2. Building blocks

3. Anamalz figurines

4. Lengths of colourful fabric like silk

5. Arches and nesting bowls

6. Peg people

We are currently not registered with NDIS, however we do offer a range of wonderful sensory toys and are more than happy to chat to you about your needs and suggest items we have.

For those who are on self-managed NDIS plans we can provide you with a tax invoice that includes all the details you need.

1. Buy and/or create experiences - movie or show tickets, hot air balloon rides, zoo or aquarium visit.

2. Find out what they love to play with and add to it. For example, Lego, Magna-tiles and most construction toy brands have expansion or add-on sets.

3. Art and craft supplies and activities - Tiger Tribe have a wonderful range of creative and fun kits, we also have lots of Make-Your-Own kits from Huckleberry.

Hugs for Kids is a family business, created for a single purpose; to bring the art, wonder and love back into the often too commercial world of children's toys, clothes and accessories. Hugs for Kids opened it's first store in 2012. Located in Belgrave, Victoria, Australia, the shop is a specialist children's boutique designed to bring together the best kids products on offer and present them in a single, accessible space. Soon after opening that first "bricks & mortar" store we saw an opportunity to spread the message we believed so deeply and so, being gluttons for punishment, we built this website as well.
